Tyto alba
Feeds on voles, frogs and insects.
Widely distributed, they can be found in Britain and Europe, from Arabia east to southeast Asia, Australia, sub-Saharan Africa, Madagascar and in both North and South America.
The UK population is some 4,000 birds.
Barn Owls differ from all other owls structurally by having heart-shaped faces. Their inner and middle toe are roughly equal in length and the claw of the middle toe has a comb like serrated edge.
Although essentially nocturnal it commonly hunts for up to two hours after dawn and before sunset.
